Role:
Deputy General Manager
Reports to: Venue General Manager

The Deputy General Manager is a member of the Management Team. The main purpose of this job is to ensure that our customers receive the highest quality of service when visiting the venue.  As a member of the Management Team the Deputy General Manager will deputise in the absence of the General Manager. The Deputy General Manager will also contribute to the evolution of the Business Plan for the venue.  

Your role will be to assist with the operational running of the venue and business as a whole and to ensure that staff are fulfilling their duties to the best of their ability:

Essential characteristics and experience required:

  • Motivating and managing a hospitality team

  • A proven knowledge of budgetary control, how to maximise opportunities and support your General Manager in controlling the business, ensuring it is profitable at all times

  • To be an inspirational leader who cares passionately about creating a positive environment for your guests and your team, inspiring the team to go the extra mile for guests

  • A knowledge of the legislation requirements of a hospitality business, ensuring that

Health and Safety and all legislative matters are compliant, and reporting issues arising to the General Manager and Operational Manager

Duties

  • To be involved in the setting of venue targets and objectives, and to monitor and strive for their achievement

  • To contribute to the monitoring of the venue accounts, budgets and targets

  • Investigation of shortfalls or overspends against target, and development of agreed measures to rectify variations, so that overall budgetary targets are realised

  • Produce reports and presentations as required by the business

  • Recruitment, training, and performance development and monitoring (including setting and monitoring of personal targets) of all direct reports, so as to ensure their full contribution to the success of the venue and achieving targets

  • To ensure that staff are well-motivated, and that they are briefed and trained so as to make maximum individual contribution to the achievement of the company’s business objectives

  • To produce and oversee staff rotas and ensuring staffing levels are sufficient for events being hosted by the venue

  • Supervise the assistant managers and to offer aid  and support where needed

  • Keep staff busy and productive at all times

  • Ensure staff meet the standards of the business, addressing and correcting bad practice where need be

  • To take positive action to meet objectives and targets

  • To be commercially aware in order to continuously drive the business forward

  • Contribute ideas to bring new and innovative events to the venue

  • To be proactive in maximising sales and generating revenue

  • To maintain high standards of hygiene, health and safety

  • Maintain strict stock and financial control

  • Ensure all areas open on time and that they are ready for business

  • Ensure excellent front of house service, allocate and support staff throughout the shift to maintain speed of service and cleanliness of venue

  • Pre-empt and actively responding to problems that arise

  • Ensure venue closes on time, end of day jobs are completed to a high standard, staff are signed off promptly, all back and front of house areas are checked and secured and ensure that the venue is in excellent order for the next day’s business

  • Overseeing the management of reliable systems for cash handling, maintaining effective safe procedures and controlling float fluctuations.

  • Attend all staff and management meetings

  • Being committed to continued training, research and development as appropriate and to keep abreast of relevant industry developments.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

The post holder will:

  • Ensure all duties are carried out in accordance with departmental and company Health & Safety procedures

  • Dress in accordance with Company uniform policy and wear protective clothing as issued, if applicable at any time to the role being undertaken

  • Undertake any relevant training and development that may be required and keep abreast of developments in his/her field of expertise.

  • Carry out any other duties as required from time to time, taking into consideration the grade of the post and the capabilities of the post holder.   

Person Specification

This role requires the successful candidate to be a well presented professional with proven leadership experience in the field of hospitality.  

Essential Qualities

  • A high level of experience and understanding of growing and delivering a hospitality offer in a public facing venue.

  • Excellent leadership skills with experience of leadership and development of a staff team.

  • A good understanding of Health and Safety.  

  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills at levels appropriate for the accountabilities of the Post.

  • Numeracy and ability to read and understand accounts and other financial data, as appropriate for the accountabilities of the post.
